Mercenary Tales 62.

The City-State Of Vexil.

In one of the smaller towns in the hill country of northern Vexil. Tovis the war engineer stops at the corner of a house, and looks across the town square, to where he can see the Vexilian aircorp warship just beyond what's the town's only inn.
The commander in the engineering corp of the Armies of Farque watches for a while, before he moves away when a couple of town folk walk this way.
The war engineer who is originally from the kingdom of Druvic, where he previously served in the army of an ambitious baron in the south of his homeland.
Heads back around the house, and makes his way along the lane that goes through this part of town.
Tovis spots Zam the ex mercenary up ahead, waiting near one of the two taverns in town. The war engineer joins the young man who hails from the City Of Ruins.
"Anything?" murmurs Zam the ex mercenary as the two of them amble along one of the narrow streets in the small town this cold and blustery winter's day.
"Not much" is the quiet reply from Tovis the war engineer, who after a brief pause adds "I suspect his highness will find out much more".
Next to the commander in the engineering corp of the Armies of the Lands Farque, the young ex mercenary nods his head in agreement.
Meanwhile onboard the warship that Tovis was discreetly observing, Helbe the elven thief who is in the captain's cabin. Closes the top draw of the small desk located in the cabin.
The young elven noble from the island principality of Laerel, who has just gone through the ship's log. As well the other documents of relevance to be found in the captain's cabin. Walks over to the starboard side portal, and looks outside.
The elven masterthief watches what's going on outside, then slightly nods his hooded head to himself.
The blurred and shielded elven magic user, who is the grandson of the ruling prince of the island principality of Laerel, glances at his right shoulder which Narladene the group pixie has just landed upon.
"Anything?" quietly asks Narladene the group pixie, who as usual when she and the elven master assassin are alone, speaks in the elven language.
"Nothing earth shattering" is the quiet reply of Helbe the elven thief who continues to look out of the portal on this side of the captain's cabin.
"They're up here to stop any incursions from across the border" continues the highly talented elven practitioner of magic.
"So nothing we weren't expecting" quietly says the naturally magical creature who is originally from the Sunreach Mountains.
The elven master archer nods his hooded head in agreement with that, then he quietly tells the ground pixie who is 'attached' to him "They're hellbent on stopping any force coming over the border from Girdane".
The young elven noble who is the grandson of the ruling prince of Laerel, and who happens to be Lord Farque's envoy, and a member of the undead warlord's personal council, quietly continues with "At least now we're getting a picture of the forces they're gathering here in northern Vexil".
Narladene grunts at that, then the tiny winged creature quietly says "The others are getting back together".
Helbe the elven thief, or prince Helbenthril Raendril to give his full name, briefly closes his eyes as he senses.
The elven spellcaster slightly nods as he senses both Saanea the witch and Mira Reinholt the mage, closer to one another now.
The elven magic user, who can sense the mage Reinholt, even though the Vexilian mage in exile wears an amulet that hides him from other practitioners of magic.
Quietly says to the naturally magical creature perched upon his right shoulder "We better go and tell them what we've found".
Narladene nods her tiny head in agreement with that, then she grabs onto the shoulder of the young elven noble's cloak as she senses what he's about to do.
Then they disappear as the highly talented elven practitioner of magic as he looks out the starboard side portal, here in the captain's cabin. Shifts away from the warship that's part of the Vexilian aircorp fleet.
"They're coming back" says Lisell Maera the scout after entering the tavern and making her way over to where Mira Reinholt the mage and Malisse aka Zubutai the barbarian hordesman are seated.
Tamric Drubine the field commander and Saanea the witch enter the tavern next, and after glancing over to where sir Percavelle Le Dic and Shur Kee the monk are sitting with Dalinvardèl Tanith the elven spy.
The young noble from the feudal kingdom of Sarcrin who is a field commander in the Armies of Farque, and his lover the witch from the Maldin Hills.
Sit down at the table where the scout Maera is sitting with two of the members of Lord Farque's personal council.
A short while later and Tovis the war engineer and Zam the ex mercenary enter the tavern, and after the commander in the engineering corp of the Armies of Farque has a quiet word with Tamric Drubine.
The two of them sit down at the table where the short statured monk, the large heavily armoured knight and the elven spy are sitting.
Not long after, and the hooded figure of Helbe the elven thief enters the tavern, one of two such establishments in the small hill country town in northern Vexil.
The young elven noble who is the grandson of Prince Raendril of Laerel, sits down at the remaining seat at the table where most of the rest of the group are sitting.
After the elven masterthief orders a drink from the serving woman, he casts a spell, then says "You can speak freely".
The highly talented elven magic user who is Lord Farque's envoy, continues with "No one in here, can hear what we're actually saying".
"Neat spell" murmurs Mira Reinholt the mage, which earns a quick grin from his fellow practitioner of magic, the elven princeling from Laerel.
"Find out anything useful?" asks Tamric Drubine the field commander after he takes a sip from his drink, a mug of ale.
"Not much" is the reply of Helbe the elven thief, who continues on with "It's what we expected" followed by "They're here to stop any incursions from across the border".
The elven master assassin then goes into detail what he found onboard the Vexilian warship. As well as in the inn near it. Where most of the senior army officers are staying while they patrol this part of northern Vexil.
After hearing what the elven magic user has to say, field commander Drubine nods his head then quietly says "If the Geist cousins attempt to cross the border again, they and their army will be wiped out".
The others at the table agree with that, then after the serving woman brings over the elven masterthief's drink, the young elven noble from the island principality of Laerel quietly says "I've got a feeling they've been set up".
"The Geists?" asks Malisse aka Zubutai the barbarian hordesman after sharing a look with the mage Reinholt, as they've both contemplated the same thing.
The elven princeling nods his hooded head, then says "Yeah" followed by "The more I think about it, the more it seems a possibility" he continues with "A strong possibility".
Then before any of them can ask another question, Helbe the elven thief adds "If the column we were with had been further east like the others, we would of come under attack too".
Tamric Drubine or Tam as he's more commonly called by the others in the group, nods his head, then says "Not to mention there was already patrol ships, and army companies basically in the direction all the columns were heading too".
"We've speculated it already" says Lisell Maera the scout who looks at the elf who is Lord Farque's envoy, and asks him "What makes you so sure of it now?".
The highly talented elven magic user is silent for a few moments, then he says "Because pretty much nothing is going on over on the other side of the border".
The spellcaster who hails from the island principality of Laerel follows on from that with "I mean the Girdanians themselves" he continues with "They're not doing anything over there" he then adds "From what we've seen, they're still just doing their basic winter patrols, which is to say very little".
Both Mira Reinholt and Malisse aka Zubutai Timaginson slowly nod their heads, then Tamric Drubine the field commander after sharing a look with his lover Saanea the witch, quietly says "Since it seems likely they've been set up".
The senior officer in the Armies of Farque who is originally from the feudal kingdom of Sarcrin, then adds "Who exactly is it that's set them up" followed by "And why?".
No one at the table says anything for a few moments, then it's finally the once powerful mage Mira Reinholt who breaks the silence, and says "Well the obvious person is that cousin of theirs" followed by "Misa".
"Why would she do that?" asks Lisell Maera the scout, who continues on from that with "It's her own family".
"Families can be a little odd" dryly says the mage who is also a highly skilled swordmaster, who then dryly adds "Trust me, I should know".
Prince Helbenthril Raendril chuckles, then says "That's a fact" the elven master archer continues with "Mira's right, she's the obvious choice".
The young elven noble whose mother is the heir to the crown of the principality of Laerel, and whose father is the Warden of Quinthain, the forest city to the east of the Lands Farque, is silent for a moment before he says "Though a bit too obvious".
"How so?" asks Malisse aka Zubutai the barbarian hordesman as she looks at the elf who is Lord Farque's envoy.
Shrugging his shoulders, the elven masterthief says "I'm not sure" followed by "Just a hunch I guess" the elven princeling then quietly adds "Something's not quite right about all of this".
Now that's something they can all agree on. As nothing about this whole escapade has seem right from the get go.
Then Lisell Maera or Lis as she's more commonly called by the others says "I guess that lot Lord Farque, Dorc and Beldane are after will have the answers".
The mage Reinholt slightly grimaces, and after a shake of his hooded head, he dryly says "That's if those two don't kill them all first".
Next to him, his fellow member of Lord Farque's personal council, Malisse aka Zubutai the son of Timagin, nods her head in agreement with the practitioner of magic who is in exile from his homeland, the city-state of Vexil.
"Well Beldane's there with them" says the scout Maera, who continues on with "Hopefully he can get some answers before Lord Farque and Dorc kill all of them".
"Hopefully" dryly says the rotund woman who is really a hordes outrider from the southern tundra by the name of Zubutai Timaginson.
"I don't hold out too much hope for that" says Malisse aka Zubutai the barbarian hordesman, who like her fellow councilor Mira Reinholt, is doubtful that the trio down in the city of Vexil, will find all of the answers to what's happening here in the hill country of northern Vexil and southern Girdane.
"Well, what ever happens" quietly says Helbe the elven thief, who continues on from that with "Either down in the capital city, or up here in the northern border region" followed by "It's best that we move on, and continue to find out what else is happening here in the hill country".
Tamric Drubine nods, then after looking at the three who are members of Lord Farque's personal council, he quietly says "We're in agreement then?" followed by "Move on?".
Helbe the elven thief nods his hooded head, followed by Mira Reinholt the mage who also nods his hooded head yes.
Finally Malisse aka Zubutai Timaginson nods her head in response to the question from the young noble originally from the kingdom of Sarcrin.
"Right then" says the young field commander, who continues on from that with "Time to move on then".
Tam pauses for a moment or two, then after looking over at the others at the next table over, who with the exception of sir Percavelle Le Dic, have been closely following the conversation at this table.
Tamric Drubine quietly says to the rest of the group at the two tables, here in one of the small town's two taverns "Let's get going" . . . . . .
