Mercenary Tales 68.

The City Of Vexil.

They're in the south of the city, searching for their prey. Hoping they'll locate it, then have a chance to destroy it.
Walking across a square, behind the two elves Jarkellé the elven warden and Salinéll the elven maiden, Margin the wizard turns when someone calls out his name.
The local born practitioner of magic sees it's the cleric Beldane, who waves to him, beckoning him over.
"Something's up" says Margin the wizard to the two elves from the principality of Alínlae, who have turned as well.
"Think they've found it?" asks Salinéll the elven maiden, the wizard in the dark red robes shrugs his shoulders, then says "Only one way to find out".
The elven magic user nods, then the trio head back across the square, on what's a cold winter's morning here in the city of Vexil.
When they join the fighting cleric in the church of Glaine, he gestures at one of the other clerics, this one in the church of Famal, who says "Something's happened".
"Oh?" says Margin the wizard, who after sharing a look with the two elves, asks the cleric in the church of Famal "What is it?".
"One of the other groups has disappeared" replies the cleric, who though older than Beldane, is no where near as powerful as the fighting cleric who hails from the kingdom of Nastell.
The wizard Margin and the elves Salinéll and Jarkellé share another look, for they've been told that the groups who have gone out to search for their prey, are to keep in contact with each other.
"Now another group who went to check on them, are missing too" says the cleric in the church of Famal, who is one of a trio who have joined the cleric Beldane, and the group of so called mercenaries.
"Shit" mutters Margin, who grew up not that far from here in the south of the city that's the capital of Vexil.
"Thinks it's who we're looking for?" asks Salinéll the elven maiden who looks from one cleric to the other.
The member of the church of Famal shrugs his shoulders, while Beldane the cleric replies with "Maybe" as he rubs his chin in thought.
"Where did they go missing?" asks the elven maiden from the principality of Alínlae who is hiding her ability to cast magic.
"In the west of the city" says the cleric in the church of Famal, the wizard Margin nods then he asks the powerful fighting cleric in the church of Glaine "Can you sense them?. As he knows that Beldane is powerful enough to sense all the way over into that part of the city.
With a shake of his head, the powerful practitioner of magic from the kingdom of Nastell says "I don't know who they are" followed by "Remember, I'm new here and don't know many of the clergy from the different churches and temples in the city".
Margin grunts, then after a glance at Salinéll, who slightly nods, the local born spellcaster asks the powerful fighting cleric "Should we go over to that part of the city and sees what's going on?".
Beldane, who has been put in charge of this particular group, for the simple reason he's far more powerful than any of the other spellcasters amongst the group.
And the fact he confronted their prey yesterday, and survived a fight with it. When it easily killed the others who took it on.
Is silent for a few moments as he contemplates matters, then he says "I guess we could take a look, and see what's happening over there".
The powerful practitioner of magic originally from the kingdom of Nastell, who sounded slightly indecisive there, is far more decisive, and direct when he tells the cleric in the church of Famal "Call the other two back".
Beldane the cleric then tells Margin the wizard "Get the others with you" followed by "Mercer and Marcus isn't it?" he then adds "And Kynil".
The local born practitioner of magic nods his head, then the wizard in the dark red robes, who is acting as the leader of the group, instead of Salinéll who actually leads the group.
Goes off to look for Mercer, Marcus and the sword mistress Kynil, who are on the nearby streets, searching for any sign of their prey.
It's not too long before they've gathered on a corner of a square, and Beldane the cleric leads them to a lane.
Where he instructs them all to what to do, the fighting cleric in the church of Glaine then levitates up to the roof of a building, so do the other three clerics.
One in the church of Famal, another in the church of Maëlle, and third in heavy armour, who is a member of the church of Goran.
While Margin the wizard teleports himself and the rest of the group up onto the roof where the four clerics are.
Looking to the northwest across the city, Margin the wizard asks Beldane the cleric "Can you sense it from here?".
"Not sure" is the reply of the powerful practitioner of magic who hails from the kingdom of Nastell, who follows that with "The closer you are to it, the better" he then adds "Sensing for something's that's undead is way different than sensing for another spellcaster" he continues with "And way more difficult too".
The three other Vexil based clerics nod in agreement with the powerful cleric in the church of Glaine.
Margin the wizard grunts, then he quietly says "Didn't know that". Next to him, Salinéll the elven maiden silently agrees with the Vexilian born practitioner of magic.
The powerful fighting cleric then confers with the cleric in the church of Famal, who is the one keeping in contact with the other groups, who have spread out across the city, to search for their prey.
As most of the city's churches and temples have banded together to rid Vexil of the threat of the undead being who showed up recently.
They've got permission to do so from the city council, which means they've got permission from the mage council of Vexil too.
"Where would be a good place to start?" asks Beldane the cleric after he speaks with the cleric in the church of Famal, who points then says "That area is where the first group who disappeared were searching".
Looking in the distance to where the member of the church of Famal pointed, Margin the wizard nods then says "Mostly residential buildings, and some small businesses and shops".
As he knows that part of the city quite well. In fact the spellcaster in the dark red robes knows most of the city of Vexil quite well.
"One place is as good as another I guess" says Beldane the cleric, who looks at his fellow clerics from different churches, and tells them "Get ready for anything".
He then tells the cleric in the church of Goran, who is way more powerful than the other two "If either one of us is able to hold it if we find it, the other will have to destroy it".
"I understand" says the cleric in the suit of heavy plate armour who is a member of the church of Goran.
Then looking at the mercenaries, Beldane tells them "If we locate it, things will be difficult for you lot" he then adds "I know I'm asking much, but you'll have to attack it so it's distracted" he continues with "It might be our only chance of holding it, then destroying it".
Though they all nod in understanding, it's Margin the wizard who answers for the group when he says "We know the risk".
The Vexilian born practitioner of magic continues with "And we're willing to take it". He more so than the others, as he wants their prey destroyed for the simple reason it killed his brother during the Battle of Vexil a little over two and a half decades ago.
"Ready?" asks Beldane the cleric after a moments silence, the trio of clerics, as well as the group of mercenaries, all nod their heads to indicate they're ready.
Then the powerful practitioner of magic who hails from the kingdom of Nastell casts, and a gateway quickly forms.
The first one through it is the cleric in the church of Goran, he's quickly followed by the cleric in the church of Maëlle, and the one in the church of Famal.
Mercer is the first of the mercenaries through the gateway, quickly followed by Marcus, then the sword mistress Kynil.
Next through the magical doorway is the elven warden Jarkellé, then the elven maiden Salinéll. Next through it is the wizard Margin.
Last through is Beldane the cleric, who slightly nods to himself. As so far, the plan devised by Lord Farque and himself, is pretty much going as they envisioned it.
The powerful fighting cleric in the church of Glaine steps out the other side of his gateway, and drops his spell behind him.
Looking around at the surrounding area from the rooftop they're on, Beldane like the other three clerics senses for anything undead.
The member of the church of Glaine, instantly locates Lord Farque, knowing that the other three clerics haven't.
The powerful practitioner of magic holds up a gauntleted hand when Margin the wizard asks him "Anything?".
Narrowing his eyelids as he turns to the left, Beldane is silent for a few moments as a cold gust of wind blows across the roof they're on.
The fighting cleric in the half plate armour who is a member of the church of Glaine takes a few steps to the side of the roof, then he suddenly says "Down".
The others all drop down flat to the roof, as does Beldane who is quite pleased with the acting job he's doing.
Gesturing away a bit further to the west of their location, the fighting cleric in the church of Glaine quietly says "That way" followed by "Just over a hundred yards away" he then adds "It was just on a rooftop that way".
Ignoring the muttered "Shit" from the mercenary named Mercer, Beldane quietly asks the other clerics "Can you sense it?".
It takes a few moments, but the cleric in the church of Goran is the first to answer with "I can now".
The cleric in the church of Famal, then the one in the church of Maëlle soon sense their prey as well, not that far from where they are.
"Who knows what's happened to the others who were in this part of the city" quietly says the fighting cleric in the church of Glaine, who follows that with "But I don't sense any clerics or priests in the immediate vicinity".
"Nor I" says the cleric in the church of Goran, the other two clerics agree with him, as does the wizard Margin.
The elven magic user Salinéll silently agrees with the other practitioners of magic As she too can't sense any cleric spellcasters close by.
"Think we can teleport over there and take it by surprise?" quietly asks Margin the wizard as they look to the building in the distance their prey is most likely inside of.
"I'd rather bloody not" mutters the heavily armoured cleric in the church of Goran as they lie flat upon the roof they're on.
Beldane grimaces and nods in agreement with the heavily armoured spellcaster in the church of Goran.
"What?" asks Margin the wizard as he looks at the two clerics in heavy armour, one in full suit of plate armour, the other in half plate.
"There's a fairly high chance that the undead can sense magic" explains Beldane the cleric, who follows that with "Not sure if they can actually sense a caster, but it's more than highly likely they can sense spells".
"Doctrine in our church is that they can definitely sense spells" says the cleric in the church of Goran.
"Our church as well" adds the cleric in the church of Maëlle, the cleric in the church of Famal nods in agreement with him.
"As for them sensing the actual caster, no one is actually sure" states the heavily armoured member of the church of Goran.
Beldane is definitely sure that the undead can sense a spellcaster. He knows from personal experience. Though he's not divulging that information to this lot.
Instead the powerful practitioner of magic who hails from the kingdom of Nastell says "It's why they can damn well react so quickly to us clerics when we cast".
The fighting cleric in the church of Glaine continues with "Best to physically confront them, than cast spells at them with the exception of holding spells".
Then he looks around and spots a trapdoor in the roof, the powerful Nastellian spellcaster gestures to it, then says "We'll head down, and make our way on foot".
Beldane the cleric looks at the other practitioners of magic with the exception of Salinéll the elven maiden, and quietly tells them "Hold your power within yourselves as best you can".
The member of the church of Glaine continues with "Just incase it actually can sense us". The three other clerics, and the wizard Margin nods to that.
Then they all head to the trapdoor, and start making their way down into the building, then downstairs.
It's not too long before all nine of them, the four clerics and the five so called mercenaries, are outside on this cold winter's morning here in the city of Vexil.
"Hurry" quietly says Beldane the cleric who starts leading the way towards their prey, who he senses is just under a hundred yards away from them.
As they hurry through the streets in this part of the city that's the capital of Vexil, the powerful fighting cleric as do the other spellcasters,  continue holding their power within themselves.
"Shit" mutters Margin the wizard ""What is it?" asks Salinéll the elven maiden, who already knows what it is, as she's sensed it.
"Others have shown up" says Beldane the cleric, who continues with "Close to where we're going". The powerful practitioner of magic who hails from the kingdom of Nastell then adds "It's cleric Omarc and his group".
The cleric in the church of Famal nods his head in agreement, as he too can sense the cleric who is the current head of his church, here in Vexil.
"Hurry" urges the cleric Beldane who waves for the others to move faster as they head to the building that their prey is in.
"This is going to be a shit show" quietly says Margin the wizard to Salinéll the elven magic user as they follow behind the clerics.
She's in agreement with the spellcaster in the dark red robes beside her, Salinéll the elven maiden quietly says to him and the rest of the group of mercenaries "Do the best that you can".
While ahead, infront of them, Beldane the cleric silently leads them to where Lord Farque and Dorc da Orc are waiting to execute the plan they have devised for the five remaining members of the group they've been searching for, not just here in the city of Vexil, but also up in hill country of northern Vexil . . . . . .
